I-95 Sound Walls

Gilbert Southern Corp., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, was awarded a $40 million contract from the Florida Department of Transportation to construct a sound wall spanning 30 miles of Interstate 95 through Miami.

The 18-month project involved demolishing the existing footings and a barrier wall. Crews constructed new footings, 210,000 square feet of cast-in-place barrier wall and 1.1 million square feet of cast-in-place textured noise wall, ranging from 11 to 19 feet in height. The wall's close proximity to traffic (typically 8 feet) and the need to withstand vehicle impacts require the cast-in-place method. Additional work included more than one million square feet of formwork, more than nine million pounds of rebar and more than 46,000 cubic yards of concrete.

Due to heavy traffic on I-95, lane closures were only allowed at night. The majority of noise wall operations were completed at night, while footings and barrier wall construction occurred during the daytime activities.
